About

Just what the internet needed . . . another music blog. So why should you trust me? Actually, you shouldn’t. Not until I’ve proven to you that I know what I’m talking about and my opinions aren’t totally insane (don’t judge me too harshly, one of my favorite songs of the last 10 years is “Party In The USA” by Miley Cyrus). So who am I to tell you about anything? Well, I’m just some guy, ya know . . . but I’ve been seriously collecting and listening and studying music history since my early teen years back in the late ’80s.

My name is Houston Roby: early 40s, married, one daughter, lived all over the country as well as Asia and Europe.  The Beatles are my favorite band, so I tend to favor short, super-catchy songs with clever arrangements and unpredictable twists. Hey, I like the pop music. But my tastes range widely, from Hank Williams to Uriah Heep to Modest Mouse. So I’m prepared to tell you why The Rolling Stones’ Let It Bleed is a masterpiece, but so is Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream, albeit for different reasons.  You’ve got a skewed perception of me already, don’t you?

I’m not sure what direction this blog will take, but it will likely comprise contemporary album reviews, a little bit of history, and occasional observations on general musical phenomena. Hopefully, a little something for everyone, but probably focusing a little more heavily on aspiring music geeks. It will be more on the general side, so if you want an in-depth analysis of King Crimson’s Lark’s Tongue In Aspic and why it is better or worse than ELP’s Brain Salad Surgery then you’re probably in the wrong place. If you don’t know what ELP stands for, I will eventually tell you. Maybe. I haven’t decided yet.
